Preparing for the trip

Traveling to Europe, especially to the former 'Iron Curtain' countries that

have so long been closed for visitors, is very exciting, but can also be quite tiring.

Jet lag is common when changing 7 or 8 time zones, so the team will discuss

strategies for avoiding that as much as possible as the trip nears. More importantly,

you must be prepared to walk everywhere you go in the small towns that we'll be in,

and there won't be any air conditioning! Here are some other things you need to know:

* It is recommended to get your hepatitis A and B vaccinations (may take 6

   months, so start now)

* Get your passport as soon as possible

* Attend the team meetings for preparation (probably one or two per month)

* Pray regularly that God would enable each one of us to be a true light for Him

on this mission trip, and that He will protect us in every way.

* Start saving money! Costs are outlined below.

Fundraising

If you do not have funds already, you may want to talk with your pastor and the

mission leader in your church about your plans to serve the Lord in Romania during

the summer months. Also share with your family and friends, and ask them to pray

for you and support you. If you need a letter from us to your pastor or missions

director, please let us know.

Passports

You should have your passport application submitted by March 1st to ensure you

have your passport well ahead of time. If you currently have a passport,

please check the date of expiration. To obtain a new passport, you will need the following:

* 2 passport pictures (taken at AAA or a photo shop)

* A certified copy of your birth certificate

* A photo ID or your social security card

* A completed passport application form, to be submitted to any of the

passport issuing offices in person. www.travel.state.gov/passport_services.

REMEMBER: Whenever traveling overseas, have copies of your passport

and plane tickets, and it is advisable to leave a copy with your family

dollars per person. You also need to send the total amount at least 20

days before the departure date to our office in Pensacola, Florida.

* We also want to encourage you to share with your church about One to

One's ministry and ask the pastor and others to make a donation, so that

we can sponsor the poorest of poor to still attend a youth camp this sum

"one of the most oppressive and cruel regimes the world has seen"

"The HIV rate in Romania’s orphanages is the highest in Europe"

"one of the highest abortion rates in the world"

Romania
For 45 years Romania was ruled by one of the most oppressive and cruel Communist regimes the world has seen. People starved while dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu sold the food the country was making to other countries. Government policies tried to make families have loads of children by making contraception illegal. Because of this, many unwanted children were left in overcrowded and squalid orphanages.
Under Ceaucescu’s regime Christians were under great persecution. Their lives were severely restricted – denied access to higher education and refused decent jobs. Many were thrown into prison or tortured. Many Christians bravely refused to deny Jesus and risked their lives to demonstrate against the dictatorship.
In 1990 Ceaucescu was over thrown and executed. Conditions in Romania struggle to improve while drug abuse, abortion rates and prostitution are all on the increase.

Youth Facts
Translyvania, home to the legendary Count Dracula, is now part of modern Romania. A Dracula themepark is opening soon and hoping to attract tourists from all over the world.

  Answers to Prayer
Since 1989 there has been a steady movement of church planting. On average 5 new church buildings were opening every week until 1999. Pray that these churches will become established and effective. Pray that more money and people will be able to be released, so that more churches can be planted.

  Challenges for Prayer
Romanian society is affected by high rates of violent crime, prostitution, alcoholism and drug abuse. Romania has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. Pray that people would find hope and freedom in Jesus.
Unfortunately some minority religious groups still suffer from persecution from the Orthodox Church rather than the government itself. Pray that there might be even greater opportunities and freedom for people to share the gospel in Romania.
Thank God for the survival of the Romanian church through the years of persecution. Pray that the church would continue to adapt and grow, without compromise, now that there is more freedom to worship.
One of the most haunting of Ceaucescu’s legacies is the hundreds of thousands of children abandoned in orphanages or living on the streets. The HIV rate among them is the highest in Europe. Pray for all those who are working with these children that God would use them to love and reach out to this broken generation.
